npbuIn the beginning of 2017 Google announced improved translation machinery based on deep networks. You can test how far the engine got (as of Oct 2017)... Nowhere close to human translation, but for most part you get the meaning and at least you can find the parts which call for proper translation.
The time passes (2024 now) and new family of models is available. I did second pass via DeepL, which and made it available as well. Should be way better and I suggest to use this version for your read.
The foreword is already translated by R. Lisker, so I didn’t mess with that part for google translate.
Few technical points:
- DeepL: document translations does not currently allow more than approx. 200 pages, so the translation is done piece-wise. OTOH the machinery knows how to parse footnotes and hyperlinks, so it is way better than google’s attempt. The links and page numbers are unfortunately broken, because of the piece-wise process mentioned above. There is also lot of formatting crap; text flow is sometimes broken etc. Will not fix it, but I am happy to handover the full .docx document if someone wants to improve.
- Google translate: interface is quirky, so it is difficult to get the whole thing through a single pass, that’s why the whole script is cut into approx. 100 page-pieces. Given that the deep nets now take into account the context it would be better to take the whole text uncut by page numbers and headings and pass it one more time. Good source for that would be the TeX compilation referenced above (hint:). Enjoy.
